Ergonomics

Today it is raining. It has been continuously raining for 3 days now. There always seems to be more washing when it is raining but I think this is just an illusion; it just takes longer to dry. So again today, I drag the washing basket of wet washed laundry up the stairs. The clothes horses are already up and assembled, haphazardly covered in dry washing from yesterday that has been picked over by my husband and children looking for something clean and dry to wear. I throw the rest of the dry washing in a pile to fold later and set to work hanging the wet stuff.

Upstairs is warm; it is always warm up there. The heat pump works continuously through winter, heating the whole of the upstairs and creating the warmest and driest area on the landing and down the hall. This is where my clothes horses are set up; directly under the heat pump as it is the most efficient way to dry clothes when they can’t be hung outside. Unfortunately it creates an obstacle course for those who wish to walk down the hall to use the bathroom at the end, and the kids think I am creating huts for them to play in with the draped washing. It is not ideal, but it works. I look forward to some warm, dry weather and it can all go outside and the rain no longer dictates how I do things.
